The services mi-HUB provides are linked to the steps taken when starting a business from home:
Virtual office: when you can't afford an office but needs to have a business address.
Virtual office + landline voice mail: when you also need a land line to receive phone calls from your potential customers.
Hot desk: The entrepreneur can rent a desk for a day, part time or full time but they don`t have an allocated desk, they use the desk that is available.
Permanent desk: For those who are now trading for over 12 months, generating good revenue and looking to grow.
Private office: Slightly more established businesses with a few employees who want to have privacy in a lockable office.
Workshops, seminars, networking events (paid and unpaid)
Finance: we help the entrepreneurs in the hub to structure their businesses so they can raise finance through debt or equity and we charge 5% over the money raised.
Hire of boardroom, events room and training room
Background and history
In June 2015 Rafael decided to carry out research to find out the key issues faced by international entrepreneurs in business. Rafael went to Stratford station with 5 other people and interviewed 200 expatriates about their interest in business. The research found that the 3 main challenges faced by migrants were: (i) lack of local knowledge; (ii) lack of network; and (iii) lack of funding. In July, Rafael organised 3 events at Google Campus that attracted 300 international entrepreneurs. After the event, applications were open for the Migrant Business Accelerator (MBA), to start In September 2015. Rafael launched the MBA - a business programme where 10 international entrepreneurs were selected to attend workshops in marketing, finance and operations.
Over the 4 months Rafael organised and managed the MBA where tutors and 25 mentors helped the entrepreneurs to develop their businesses. During this pilot programme Rafael got to understand in more detail the issues faced by expatriates running a business, including a lack of soft skills such as negotiation, presentation, leadership and pitching skills (although these issues were usually directly linked to the migrants` own perceived language limitations: accent, vocabulary, etc).
Why do we need a shared office space like this?
Although many Europeans don't see themselves as migrants, they are also likely to face these issues, just as much as migrants from other parts of the world. There is no one addressing these issues directly for migrants in the way that we proposed. Even Europeans face issues such as language, accent and vocabulary issues and they believe they will be judged by the way they speak. Other shared office spaces do not provide the support needed to raise finance or increase self-esteem and confidence to help entrepreneurs to grow their businesses. But we do.
